On safari with the eight of us

22 April 2025 | Ellen, John, Mike, Joyce, Rico, Duncan, Joey en Sharon

Our journey has begun! We arrived in Dar Es Salaam. After that we got into two jeeps and drove out of the city on our way to our next destination. That took a very long time, traffic jam, traffic jam….
But after that… off road, on the way we saw Maasai with their cattle, very special. After a well-prepared lunch, with goat and chicken that had just been slaughtered, we drove on.

Once we arrived at our destination Nyerere National Park we got an unexpected tour, hippo tracks, monkey tracks and crocodiles, hippos and monkeys spotted! After relaxing, swimming and playing games, we went on a boat trip. Unfortunately it started to rain, but we still saw some animals. Our guide and the people from the camp had placed chairs and a table on a beach in a very romantic way.

The next day was beautiful, a real adventure. Early to a delicious breakfast and then on safari. We had a very nice guide, with every animal we spotted he had a story with nice information. We saw so much, lions were spotted so we went off road, very exciting! So many animals spotted, really special, even the lions! Lunch was a bit later, but delicious.

On the way back we got stuck, car broke down, several people helped us, eventually picked up by someone else. Cooked, overheated but enthusiastic we came back, a dive in the pool and a well-deserved beer/wine and water (because that was gone, went in the engine of the jeep).
We also met the Maasai and we got a lot of information about their way of life. Learned a lot! The next day we spotted a crocodile and many elephants during the safari. Also very close, quite scary, but very impressive. Furthermore of course giraffes, impalas, squirrels, a tortoise, bushbuck (kind of gazelle), wild boars, monkeys, lots of hippos and even more animals whose names I don’t remember anymore.
Kenneth the guide (for the whole week) took us to the baobab tree, it is hollow inside so a number of us were in it. There we first saw a bat so the shock reaction was there. Again a great experience! It is such an incredibly beautiful country with lovely people. The day before yesterday we only encountered 2 jeeps in the park and today we briefly encountered one, great! No mass tourism, a great guide and nice company. In addition, we are also the only eight guests in our lodge.

In the meantime it is time to leave for Zanzibar. We relaxed here, played volleyball and enjoyed a BBQ with live music. We got dinner from the kids in The Rock. We had a delicious meal, fantastic view and friendly service. We also went snorkeling on our last day of vacation, so many fish and we were all sunburned. We had a great trip just all of us; made precious, fun, crazy, scary and fantastic memories, very grateful for that.
