Marjolijn: about the current situation in Tanzania
Over the past few days, I have received many questions from customers: ‘Is it still safe to travel to Tanzania?’ I understand that question very well. Not only because it is in the media, but also because Tanzania is unfamiliar territory for many people. It is a distant destination, but to me it feels like home. Just like the Netherlands.
Elections were held in Tanzania on 29 October. What started as a normal election led to tensions and demonstrations in some parts of the country. There was temporary unrest, particularly in the cities of Arusha and Dar es Salaam. Calm has now returned and daily life is back to normal. Shops, schools and air traffic are largely functioning as usual. In the national parks, where our travellers spend most of their trip, it is as it always is: quiet, vast and safe.
For years, Tanzania was known as one of the most stable countries in Africa. It is not surprising that something is now beginning to shift. A young generation is growing up that wants to speak out, just like in many other countries in Africa (and around the world).
At the same time, I understand that as a traveller, you are looking for certainty. And I want to give you that by telling you honestly what we see and experience. We are in daily contact with our local partners, guides and travellers on the ground. We are keeping a close eye on the news. And we are contacting customers who are leaving soon.
