Travel schedule
You will experience Zanzibar at its best while cycling. You taste, smell and feel the essence of Zanzibar and the friendly people. You cycle 20-60 kilometers daily, through the beautiful and varied landscape of Zanzibar, from one fascinating place to another. You cycle with your own company and under the guidance of an expert guide. Your luggage is taken care of. An unforgettable introduction to authentic Zanzibar, in a sustainable and sporty way.
Jambiani
Upon arrival at Zanzibar, you will be picked up and taken to the village of Jambiani. Here you will meet the guide and get a briefing about the tour and test the bikes.
Goats, ducks and many happy children run around in this authentic village. Here villagers are busy growing and picking seaweed for dinner.
But also a great beach with a long white sandbank where you can swim at high tide and take beautiful walks at low tide.
Kizimkazi
Early in the morning you will leave by bicycle to the southern tip of Tanzania, Kizimkazi (22 km). You will pass the village of Makunduchi with its red clay huts and banana trees. Here you can taste all kinds of exotic fruits.
The coral rock village of Kizimkazi gives you a good idea of how people live their lives here.
In Kizimkazi you go sailing with a traditional dhow. You can swim and snorkel from the dhow and enjoy the ocean while a light lunch is served.
When the tide comes in, you can watch the fishermen arrive with their catch and see the fish auction. And if you’re lucky, you can watch the dolphins from a distance.
Stone Town
Today is a real cycling day (56 km). On asphalt roads, village roads and off-road – just what you want. It’s a long, but flat stretch to Stone Town. In Unguja Ukuu, a small authentic and lush village by the mangrove forest, Juma takes you in his traditional dhow boat and crosses the bay to Fumba. Once you have arrived, enjoy a delicious lunch by the sea and cycle on to Stone Town.
Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a mix of different cultures and influences.
Today you will have a romantic dinner under the stars on the roof terrace of a great restaurant. From here you have a great view of the sun setting in the ocean.
Chuini
After breakfast you will cycle to a spice plantation (20 km) for a tour where you will see, smell and taste the tropical fruits and herbs of the season: vanilla, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, turmeric, lemongrass, cloves, ylang ylang, cumin , garlic, ginger, coriander, pepper, tamarind, chili, oregano and many others. You will enjoy a lunch with local ingredients from the plantation.
After this you will cycle to Chuini for dinner and overnight. Under the palm trees – on the warm sand – you can see the sun disappear into the ocean.
Nungwi
Today you cycle 35 km to the northern tip of Zanzibar, Nungwi. On the way you pass Mkokotoni, a small fishing village where locals take the boat to Tumbatu where there is a fruit and fish market.
Nungwi is a busy place, but still very cute and with a local atmosphere. It’s village is fun to explore, just like the sea. Here you do not suffer from low water, so you can swim all day. Today you bring a picnic lunch because it is difficult to get good food on the way.
Do you want to enter the nightlife? you can do that here!
You spend the night in a small villa and in the morning you can enjoy breakfast on your own veranda.
Pongwe
Early in the morning you cycle to Pongwe (45 km). You will pass the Kiwengwa / Pongwe Forest – rich in flora and fauna. Here, if you are lucky, you can see the Red Colobus monkeys, Sykes, Blue Monkeys, Sunni antelopes and various species of snakes, 47 bird species and 100 plant species, including many medicinal species. You will also visit a sugarcane plantation and pass beautiful rice fields.
You will stay in a lodge with a peaceful atmosphere. Mornings are great here so if you like the morning light get up early.
Jambiani
At Chwaka (13 km) the bicycles are put on a local dhow and yes they cross Chwaka Bay. Then you get back on the bike and follow the coastline to Jambiani (22 km).
On arrival at your hotel you have cycled a round of Zanzibar!
The next two days you will enjoy a relaxing stay after the beautiful bike ride.
If you still feel something of saddle pain, you will soon forget it in this great place.
The paradisiacal environment and soft lounge sofas provide relief ;-)

Today you will be picked up at your accommodation and taken to Zanzibar airport for the connecting flight back to your home destination.
