Along with the rhythm of nature
What was the moment when you thought, “Wow, I’ll never forget this”?
There are several, but these moments were special: the warm welcome from the staff at Ikuka Safari Camp, the fantastic view from the lodge over Ruaha National Park, and a visit to our guide’s abandoned camp, in the heart of Ruaha NP, on a rock formation where he worked as a driver/guide for BBC documentary filmmakers. The stories about his experiences there are fascinating and can be seen in the various BBC films about the big cats.
What surprised or touched you about Tanzania? Perhaps something you hadn’t anticipated?
The space and nature are unparalleled, a breath of fresh air compared to the densely populated Netherlands.
How did you experience meeting the people and the culture?
Tanzanians are very hospitable and helpful, but certainly also self-respecting. They are proud of their country and are happy to show it to you. Unlike South Africa, where I’ve traveled extensively and where tourists are often seen as walking wallets, I experience much more equality and mutual respect in Tanzania. And that’s wonderful for engaging in meaningful conversations with staff, guides, and anyone else.
What would you recommend future travelers absolutely mustn’t miss?
For a first trip to Tanzania, you should, of course, visit the most famous parks like the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. But if you want to see fewer tourists, the parks in southern (and western) Tanzania are highly recommended. They’re more authentic and offer a wealth of natural diversity in landscapes (from river deltas to mountains), vegetation, and animals. There aren’t massive animal masses, so you do have to be more proactive in spotting them, but that also gives you more of a safari feeling. If you want to see specific species, focus on their habitats; the parks in Tanzania are incredibly diverse.
And, concluding your safari with a few days in Zanzibar is also a must. Snorkeling or diving in the atoll with its stunningly colorful coral and abundance of fish is a fantastic experience. But the culture and restaurants in Stone Town are also well worth a visit.
What will you take away from this trip, in your mind, heart, and/or travel bag?
