What was the moment when you thought, “Wow, I’m never going to forget this”?

When we had to say goodbye to Ally and Emanuel, our guide and driver at Lake Manze, at the airstrip after four nights together, I had to wipe away a tear.

The camp, run by Malcolm, was fantastic, with elephants wandering around our tent. Sharing meals together was so much fun too. Every evening felt like a celebration.

What surprised or moved you about Tanzania? Perhaps something you hadn’t expected beforehand?

The warmth of the people and the relaxed pace of life. Pole pole. We loved coming together for dinner after a day on safari. And everyone was always perfectly on time, which was wonderful.

How did you experience meeting the people and experiencing the culture? Think about conversations with your guide, local customs and hospitality.

Very positively! The nature in Nyerere National Park in Southern Tanzania was impressive, with palm trees, plenty of water filled with hippos and very few other visitors. The guides were incredibly knowledgeable and took the time to understand what we were interested in. Our driver drove carefully and showed great respect for the wildlife.

What would you recommend future travellers definitely shouldn’t miss?

Lake Manze! Stay inside the national park and spend several days in one place. The Italian host was incredibly welcoming and great company, and the food was delicious, from breakfast and bush lunches to dinner.

We also loved the two-person suite, room 4B, at Mr Kahawa on Zanzibar. The sea view was absolutely beautiful. Being able to watch the sunrise from bed was very special.

What are you taking home from this journey, in your head, your heart and/or your suitcase? Something that has changed the way you do or see things, or that will simply stay with you forever.
