Three boys, one safari jeep and a camping adventure
What was the moment when you thought, “Wow, I’m never going to forget this”?
The Mara River crossing was the most memorable experience for me. And the nights camping in the Serengeti, hearing lions all around our tent. It was incredibly impressive and almost surreal.
What surprised or moved you about Tanzania? Perhaps something you hadn’t expected beforehand?
The friendly people and beautiful nature, although to be fair, I had expected both. What did surprise me was how punctual everything was. I had expected we might have to wait around for things more often, but that wasn’t the case at all. The itinerary we received beforehand was followed exactly as planned.
How did you experience meeting the people and experiencing the culture? Think about conversations with your guide, local customs and hospitality.
We really enjoyed it. The hospitality was excellent and all our encounters with local people were very positive. The only exception for us was the mountain bike ride through Mto wa Mbu, which felt quite touristy. There’s nothing necessarily wrong with that, but it just wasn’t really our thing. It sometimes felt as though you were expected to buy things everywhere at rather inflated prices.
What would you recommend future travellers definitely shouldn’t miss?
Pretty much everything we did on our journey. The way the trip was put together worked really well too. For us, the highlight was sleeping in tents in the Serengeti, particularly the campsite in Lobo. It was so remote and such a special place. Hearing lions throughout the night is something we’ll never forget.
What are you taking home from this journey, in your head, your heart and/or your suitcase? Something that has changed the way you do or see things, or that will simply stay with you forever.
