May holiday in Tanzania

12 May 2026 | Marieke & gezin

During our journey through Northern Tanzania and Zanzibar, there were so many moments when we thought: we’ll never forget this. But the balloon safari over the Serengeti was truly something special. Watching the animals below us as the sun rose was magical.

The migration in the Serengeti also made a lasting impression on us. So much wildlife gathered together, surrounded by that vast, open landscape. We absolutely loved the Ngorongoro Crater too. Everywhere we looked, something was happening.

Perhaps what surprised us most was the atmosphere in Tanzania. Everything happens at a relaxed pace. People take their time, without rushing. We noticed the same thing in our encounters with the people. Everyone was friendly, calm and cheerful. You immediately feel welcome.

What would we definitely recommend to future travellers? Take your time to really enjoy each place. We found both the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater incredibly special.

And what are we taking home from this journey? That sense of calm, and this amazing aftermovie:

Why travelling during in May is such a great choice

The May holiday is one of the lesser-known, but perhaps increasingly attractive times to visit Tanzania. The Netherlands is one of the few countries to have a two-week holiday at this time of year, which means the national parks are relatively quiet. Prices are also often lower during this period than in the high season.

May falls within the green season. The landscapes are lush and green, flowers are in full bloom and there are young animals all around. The skies are clear and free from dust. There is certainly a chance of a rain shower, but these are usually brief and refreshing.
