On this safari you immerse yourself in the culture, nature and history of the ‘other’ Tanzania. Away from the beaten track, you can enjoy each other and everyday life on the road, the mountains and the ocean in peace. You will learn about Tanzania’s history and visit the many species of wildlife in Saadani National Park. A true journey of discovery from Arusha via the Usambara Mountains, Pangani to Bagamoyo on the coast. Surprising and impressive!
Moshi
The journey starts in Moshi, the first day is the arrival day. The next day you will spend a full day in the beautiful area located at the foot of Kilimanjaro. With the guide you drive towards Marangu where you take a walk to the Ndoro or Marangu waterfalls, through beautiful green areas.
Close to the waterfall are the Chagga caves. These tunnels were dug by the Chaggas about 200 years ago. The guide takes you through part of the excavated tunnels to experience this underground world.
You will also enjoy a delicious lunch and get a coffee introduction where you will learn how coffee beans are grown, picked, pounded and roasted in Tanzania.
Mkomazi National Park
The next morning you will be picked up and drive to Mkomazi National Park in about 3 hours.
The route is beautiful and varied: along the local life at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro and the impressive Pare Mountains and the local life along the road.
At the end of the morning you will arrive at the park and visit the Rhino Project. Then you drive to your accommodation.
There is also time for safaris in the Mkomazi National Park. In this park it is possible to see the wild dog with a bit of luck.
Lushoto - Usambara
After breakfast you will be picked up for a great drive to the beautiful green mountains of the Usambara Mountains, also called the vegetable garden of Tanzania. A bird paradise with picturesque villages.
You will spend the night in a beautifully situated lodge on the rolling hills of the Usambara mountains. A truly picturesque scene.
From here you can easily walk to the neighboring town of Lushoto the next day or take a beautiful nature walk to several waterfalls. Along the way you will witness the local agricultural life, lively markets and be assured of beautiful views.
(Option) Visit to the Mambo caves.
Pangani
After breakfast in the Usambara Mountains, the journey continues to the beautiful and unspoiled Indian Ocean coast. A paradise for peace seekers, deep sea fishermen and snorkelers.
Tonight you will sleep between the palm trees in a super atmospheric lodge.
(Option 1) Do you want to dive or snorkel, windsurf or kayak or rather stay in that hammock for a while, it’s all possible here. Get inspired.
(Option 2) A walk through Pangani takes you past the former slave market, the old harbor and historic buildings from days gone by in colonial and traditional Swahili architecture.
Saadani National Park
The next morning you get up early for a jeep safari in Saadani National Park. This relatively small park is home to 4 of the Big Five; lions, buffaloes, elephants and leopards, but also monkeys, birds and countless other animals such as hippos and crocodiles in the Wami River.
And for the more daring there is a boat safari on the program at a later date.
You spend the night on a former coconut plantation overlooking the deserted beach of the Swahili coast, where you can take beautiful beach walks.
Bagamoyo
Today we drive to the Unesco World Heritage town of Bagamoyo. Once an important port city of German East Africa and now the friendly home of many different cultures.
You sleep here in a romantic lodge, consisting of simple houses in a tropical forest, a stone’s throw from the warm Indian Ocean.
(Option:) You can also take a historic city walk here, which will take you back in time. You will visit German colonial buildings, the art market and an old mosque. A visit to a shipbuilding company that builds traditional dhow sailing boats is definitely part of it.
Dar es Salaam - back home or?
After lunch in Bagamoyo you will drive via the coast to Dar es Salaam, where you will arrive at the airport – the Julius Nyerere Airport – in the late afternoon for the flight back to Amsterdam where you will arrive the next morning.
Unless you choose to extend your trip by a few days and make the crossing by boat from Dar es Salaam to the tropical island of Zanzibar. Your international flight back home can then take place from Zanzibar. Let us know your wishes and we will be happy to organize it for you.
