Our climb of Mount Meru
Africa’s highest mountain, snow, and safari. With those ideas in mind, we started our plans for Tanzania. An internet search yielded a wealth of information. Besides the stress of making a choice, we also had a new, exciting idea: climbing Mount Meru. Marjolijn combined all the ideas into a beautiful and seamless itinerary, starting with Mount Meru.
At 4,566 meters, Mount Meru is the 5th highest mountain in Africa and is located in Arusha National Park. We did the four-day trek before the longer trek to Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain at 5,895 meters. Below is a report of our fantastic experience, which we wouldn’t have missed…
When we arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport, it’s raining, and the next day starts gloomy. That’s Africa, too. We get into the small van with all our luggage and a crew of seven. It fits perfectly. At the Arusha National Park gate, there’s a delay. Something about paperwork… After jambo, we learn our next word in Swahili: pole pole, which means take it easy. This is also the motto during the trek.

The drive to the start of the trek is already a safari with zebras, buffalo, and crowned cranes. Fantastic. We set off with an armed ranger. He protects us from wild animals, especially the buffalo, one of the most dangerous animals in Africa! The ranger sees everything: buffalo (far enough away), all kinds of birds, and black-and-white colobus monkeys. We walk through a lush forest with fantastic mosses, ferns, and other plants on every tree. After a wonderful three-hour hike with a 1000-meter elevation gain, we arrive at Miriakamba Hut. Our reward: a view from the summit.
Finally, we have time to play cards together again. The popcorn and tea complete the experience. The cook prepares a three-course meal for us. It’s delicious, with lots of fresh vegetables. Before we go to bed, we get a briefing from our two guides. That way, we know exactly what to expect. The morning ritual is more or less the same every day. We wake up with a cup of tea. After half an hour of wash (a bowl of warm water). After another half hour, breakfast. And half an hour later, we leave. Breakfast is extensive, with porridge, toast, and egg, jam, or peanut butter, fresh fruit, tea, chocolate milk, and coffee. They keep a close eye on us to make sure we’re eating and drinking enough.
The ranger leads the way to Saddle Hut. We don’t spot any buffalo, but we do spot birds, a monkey, and a bushbuck. The walk is about the same length as yesterday. Again, we start in misty forests, but after a while, we emerge above the clouds. Wonderful. At the hut, we bask in the sun.
In the afternoon, we hike to Little Meru (3,820 meters). The view is phenomenal. You can see the peak of Mount Meru and a large part of the trail. Mount Kilimanjaro towers proudly above the clouds.

Snel duiken we onze slaapzak in.
