Solo in de Serengeti

4 August 2020 | Carolien & Madelon

After weeks of deliberation, we decided to go on safari in August.
From the landing at Kilimanjaro Arport where the plane was “blessed” with water by the fire brigade (it was the first KLM flight since the covid outbreak) and we were welcomed by dancing Maasai on disembarkation to passport control leaving the country – hoping that we and all tourists would return soon – we have felt super-welcome.
Our guide – who had also been without clients for months – was just as excited as we are to go on safari. The covid measures included daily temperature measurements by the guide and upon arrival in some hotels. Furthermore, there was hand gel or water and soap everywhere. We have not experienced any measure as a hindrance.
Driving through the national parks (Tarangire, Manyara, Ngorongoro and Serengeti) and encountering almost no other jeeps is surreal and unforgettable. Especially the first days we could sometimes drive for hours without seeing other tourists and we often were the only once stopping at a lion, herds or water places full of elephants.
Our guide Zephania was fantastic. Explore Tanzania had arranged everything down to the last detail. We would prefer to go on safari again as soon as possible with Explore Tanzania and Zephania!
